Callahan gone?

Two weeks ago, I thought there was no way Bill Callahan wouldn't be head coach at Nebraska next year. Now, unless things change in a hurry, I can't see how he could possibly be back. The players keep saying they're trying, but it just doesn't look like it. It hasn't looked like the defense has had a real plan all season, and now the offense seems to be following down that path. What had been a successful passing game disappeared on Saturday.

You hate to get into a rut of changing coaches every three or four years, but that might be what the Husker program is now looking at doing. You just can't help but wonder what Steve Pederson's fate will be.

I agree. After the contract extension I though they would have to keep him for at least one more year. However, if this collapse continues I now think they will be forced to fire the coach and I think Steve P. will be gone to. If you are going to fire a coach that won 75% of his games at the end of a 10-3 season that ended with a bowl victory (I know Solich was gone before the bowl game, but it was his team as far as I'm concerned) you had bettered see improvement. Right now we Husker fans would give our eye teeth for a 10-3 season and a bowl victory.

I was born in the great state of Nebraska but live in Virginia. I say this to explain that I don't get all the information that you folks do back home. So this is not my comment as much as it is my question, what happened in the past four years or for that matter in the opening game against Nevada that made anyone at the college think that a five-year contract for $1.75 million a year was wise decision? Looking back just a few games ago what do you think now, like I say I am out in Virginia but what do you folks closer to the situation see from your view point that I can’t see.
I mean what are we doing, you take away our style of play that got us 5 titles and two back to back. You take away our mascot and I quote from an employee of the college, “because he looks too much like a country hick farmer”. Side note; my grandfather and all my uncles were farmers. That is the heart of our state, hard working honest farmers. You remove our complete staff from the national championship 97 team, and to top it off you put a man in charge that hasn’t accomplished any more than the previous coach before him and give him a contract extension for the same if not worse results. Now where do we stand, are we so indebt to this coach that we have to keep him due to our financial obligations? Were there no stipulations in the contract? Can he from this point coach our team in to obscurity? Will he be allowed to continue to cash that hefty check every week no matter how absurd the result. I simply don’t know where we are going and how we will ever climb out of the hole he has allowed us to fall into or should I say dug for us. Either way I will say this win or lose the men that wear our uniform every week and represent our school and state deserve our support and respect. We cannot throw this on their shoulders alone. That is not the nature of the Husker nation, at least that’s the way I see it, but I am a long way from home.

Silly you! When are you guys ever going to grow up. I know, never. Did it ever occur to you and your like that attaching your really nutsy expections on a young team/men is, in fact, about 75% of what's making them
fall apart. God I'm glad I'm not your son or daughter, wife, neighbor, etc.
Yuuuuk

Another anonymous (6:38 pm) idiot post. What's making this team fall apart is... they're playing like a bunch of old ladies. And coached, by and large, by a bunch of clowns who won't get another coaching job after they're fired next week or at the end of this season.

Nebraska has been a great football program for over 40 years. And I'm not going to let Solich or Callahan or Pederson (or a bunch of over-hyped seniors) run it into the ground. Time for major changes. Hopefully Tom Osborne comes on board in some capacity and helps fix this mess.

And Mr. or Miss Anonymous... if you don't like that... get in line.

Callahan and the A.D. got to go. I pledge $1,000 towards the fund to buy out their rotten contracts. I agree with Brian Rosenthal, see his commentary elsewhere. Never did like Steve P., sincxe he treated Pelini like crap. I did not really mind that Solich left but Callashan and Stevie both have got to go.

Steve P's fate is a done deal. You can look at our current situation for one. But lets get a little perspective.

Mr. Nutt, the man that Steve dragged the U's good name through the mud to get is probably done after this year. Thats with a preseason HEISMAN FAVORITE. On his team.

Or Mr. Wandstadt(sorry for the spelling). He was another great hire waiting to happen. He has also managed to take Pitt a step back as well. He could still have time, but after you see coaching jobs like what is going down at Arizona State with a first year coach(at that school), you can start to see why fans at ANY school of importance in college football would get impatient.

Before anyone thinks that this is beginning of even worse things, calm down. That is a possibility, but we are one coach that can inspire kids away from being good. REAL good. You may not believe it, but we have some talent, and even more talent waiting to get developed. We have more talent than anyone in the North. On both sides of the ball. We get a coach who can get the players to believe again and we are good.

Now lets go.

Let's all take a step back and look at the situation:

The coaches and players had "fight" in all of the first 4 games until the signing of the Callahan's contract. In my opinion this is what is happening:

1. Callahan felt comfortable after signing the extension and took evething for granted and so did the coaches.

2. With the signing of the extension by Callahan/Staff players got very depressed knowing that "they truly would have to play for Callahan/staff". Essentially the players hated seeing the extension Steve Peterson gave the Callahan/coaching staff and felt like there wasn't any hope. This is why they are playing like poorly.

3. There aren't many Coaches/Players that feel the true "Nebraksa respect". Meaning the traditions don't mean anything to these recruits that are from California, Arizona, and everywhere but Nebraska. These type of recruits are playing with the attitude of "you are lucky I am here". This goes against any team play that has won us National Championships. Callahan and staff cannot fix this because they have NEVER felt it.

My predicition:

Cosgrove will be the scape goat SOON. Callahan is even blaming it on the defense (as he did on his show Sunday night.

All the rest is a mystery!!

Huskers, I am a Sooner fan with the utmost respect for Nebraska. You have classy fans and a fine football tradition that is the envy of almost every school in the nation. Keep your heads up and realize that with the right staff in place, you can easily return to your rightful place at the top of the college football world very quickly.
I remember during the Blake/Schnellenberg years getting our hats handed to us not only by you but just about everybody else who could possibly field a football team. When Coach Stoops and staff took over, people said that their wasn't enough talent in Norman to ever return to prominence. In his second year, Coach Stoops took the same players John Blake recruited and said weren't good enough to win with all the way to our 7th N.C. You have everything you need except the coaching staff.
Callahan dis-respected the storied Sooners/Huskers rivalry from the very start and has shown no ablility or desire to honor your wonderful Husker traditions and name. I may be a Sooner, but Nebraska is probably my second favorite school and I have a hard time watching what has happened to your program.
You may not want to hear it from me, but you would probably be better off firing both Callahan and Cosgrove NOW and finding someone on the staff who can inspire, fire up and lead this team till the end of the year. I know that sounds drastic but it's like a bandaid- rip it off and get it over with.
You have way too much talent and tradition to field a team that looks as bad as the Huskers have played lately. It all goes back to bad coaching. A good coach can win with the players you have on campus.
I know the majority of the Sooner Nation want to see Nebraska back to what it used to be---an animal you don't want to mess with. That was Nebraska not long ago and it will be soon again provided your next coaching choice is the right one. No more mediocre NFL coaches, look for someone who respects the college game and what Nebraska should be.
Best of luck to you. I know you are hurting and bewildered. I have been there myself after Switzer and before Stoops. It sucks but it can be fixed.

How about getting on our knees and beg, plead, coerse, whatever it takes and aske Bo Polinni to take over as head coach.....Bill

Thanks for your words of encouragement Sooner fan. We have the upmost respect for you Sooners. I wish we still played you every year instead of Colorado. Thanksgivings just aren't the same. I hope we give Callahan a full 5 years. Remember what happened to Coach Willingham? He deserved to keep coaching at Notre Dame. He almost had the program turned around.

It's about time they got rid of the guy who fired Bo Pelini.....where is Bo now? doing a great job at LSU as the defensive coordinator. Now Callahan needs to go, and he needs to take Cosgrove with him. If you can't motivate college athletes to play better, then you need to be looking for empoloyment elsewhere.

To Sooner Fan, Billy Ray... Loved your comments! You understand what it's all about. I felt the exact same way about OU when your program was struggling before Stoops came in. It just wasn't the same, and a lot of us felt bad for Oklahoma. So just wanted to say Thanks for sharing your comments, and thanks for your support!! Now that Osborne is back, we are looking forward to getting things back the way they used to be...Husker Tradition!!! From, Nebraska Farm Girl UNL Class of '91.
