Sand volleyball next college sport?
Nebraska coach John Cook is behind a movement to get sand volleyball in as an NCAA sanctioned sport. The movement to recognize sand volleyball got a boost this summer when the Committee on Women's Athletics voted to recommend that legislation move forward toward adding sand volleyball to the list of emerging sports for women.
Once 40 institutions sponsor an emerging sport, it qualifies for an NCAA championship.
Cook says sand volleyball would provide an opportunity to promote the sport in the spring during a period of the year when it's not currently being promoted.
In the coaches' proposal, sand teams would consist of five doubles teams - much like tennis - with the team that wins three matches taking the event.
